More than a menu

The work on this series began long before the first plate was placed in front of the camera.

Using the new menu as a starting point, I selected a range of dishes that would reflect the variety of the Tammenshof kitchen. Fish and meat were represented alongside vegetarian options and dishes that could also appeal to guests looking for plant-based choices. The aim was not simply to photograph as many meals as possible, but to create a balanced visual overview of what the restaurant stands for.

Each dish brought its own shapes, colours and textures. Some relied on delicate details, while others were defined by stronger contrasts, rich sauces or the structure of individual ingredients. Together, they needed to form a series that felt varied without becoming visually disconnected.

From there, I developed the photographic concept. I considered how much of the restaurant should remain visible, which perspectives would best communicate the quality of the food and how the images could feel refined without becoming overly polished or detached from the location.

The final selection combines composed food photographs with quieter details: the wooden menu, selected drinks, natural materials and glimpses of the landscape beyond the windows. Rather than presenting the dishes as isolated products, the series places them within the wider experience of Tammenshof.

Built Around the Details

The visual language was shaped by the character of Tammenshof itself: warm materials, a calm setting and a kitchen where craftsmanship remains visible.

The existing light, dark wooden tables and natural colours of the dishes became part of the composition. Additional lighting was used to create depth and bring out the different textures without making the photographs feel sterile or artificial. Sauces, herbs, crisp surfaces and delicate garnishes all react differently to light. Even a small adjustment can determine whether a dish feels dimensional and inviting or loses its structure within the frame.

Working together with a member of the Tammenshof team also made it possible to include hands, movement and small parts of the process. Sauce is poured onto a finished plate, a dish receives its final touch and freshly prepared food is carried through the restaurant.

These moments add life to the series. They reveal that the finished plate is not merely a styled object, but the result of knowledge, precision and many considered movements.

Wine and summer drinks complete the visual story, echoing the colours and atmosphere of the dishes. In several photographs, the open landscape remains visible in the background. It gives the images space to breathe and connects the food to the place in which it is served.

Professional food photography is about more than making a dish look appealing. It communicates the atmosphere of a place, the standards behind its kitchen and the experience guests can expect before they have even entered the restaurant.

For Tammenshof, the result was a flexible image collection created for use across the new menu, website and social media. Each photograph works individually, while the full series creates a more complete impression of the restaurant: considered, inviting and closely connected to its surroundings.
